The media is basking in the Convention since it began on Monday. The talking heads have been looking for drama in all the wrong places. Politics is theater and there is no better drama than the four act script the Democrats wrote for the American people thus far.
Michelle Obama did an excellent job on Monday and showed a compassionate side many Americans were unaware existed. Hillary Clinton gave the speech of her life and had the media pundits asking themselves if she should have been the nominee. Bill Clinton showed America why he is the most loved President since JFK.
Joe Biden gave a good speech, but more importantly his biography was introduced to America. This is a man who has negative wealth, he is $300k in the hole. He goes home after work and is just a regular guy. He also has a son who will be shipped out to Iraq in a few weeks; how's that for a personal stake in the resolution of the Iraq War.
Obama couldn't resist showing his face last night and it was a great move. The stadium rocked and he was so gracious to the Clintons and they were so gracious to him. Tonight we reach the climax of what has been an enormously successful convention. In front of 75,000 people and millions more at home Obama must inspire and also distinguish his policies to those of the Republicans.
Both Clintons and Joe Biden did a great job explaining to the American people what the stakes are in this election. McCain supports tax cuts which enriched only 1% of the country and impoverished millions. Over the past eight years we have endured lower wages, lower property values, more crime, the largest profits for corporations in the history of earth while squeezing the last penny out of the poorest citizens. This is about the choice between moving beyond partisanship and toward solutions rather than maintaining the status quo so that the rich can keep getting richer while the poor get poorer.
This is an election about Supreme Court Justices. Whether you want to have justices who are willing to suspend the right to challenge your imprisonment, habeas corpus, or if you want justices who will stand firm in the eyes of an international enemy and say that our Constitution is too sacred to bend the rules. Do you want justices who will say it is permissible to torture, like the attorneys at the Department of Justice did, or do you want justices who will say that torture is against the law, even if conducted in foreign lands. Do you want to have the right to choose or do you want to be ruled?
This is it people, the big night. This is the day that Obama will explain to the average citizen what is truly at stake in this election. The Bush administration along with McCain have utilized the politics of fear to sculpt the world in their twisted vision. They are extremists who believe it is acceptable to invade a country without any provocation. They are extremists who believe it is acceptable to say that sometimes the Constitution doesn't apply. They are extremists who have created a situation where it is acceptable in the international system, the set of rules they established, to preemptively invade countries taking us down the slipperiest slope we have been on since Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia.
Obama will tell us why we must support him and we we cannot afford to have four more years of Republican Executive Rule. I have thought all along that the Democrats would win in a landslide and I think we are starting to see the beginning of the end here. Obama should give a great speech and he will inspire millions who have yet to tune in to the election. The speeches that have been given thus far have been incredible. Obama will not disappoint.
