What an up and down year it has been for my beloved White Sox. The South Siders did what they had to do tonight to make it into the playoffs and what a game it was. John Danks pitched 8 scoreless innings of baseball with only a few heart stopping moments.
The Twins could barely hit the ball and the one time they had a runner on third with one out the sacrifice fly attempt failed. It was a fly ball hit to mid-center field and Griffey, the one time golden glover was in perfect position. He caught the ball and, in stride, threw it right on the money to Pierzynski who made the tag and hung on to the ball to prevent the run from scoring.
Jim Thome scored the only run in the game and it was a BOMB! He hit a change up that got away from Blackburn up high in the zone right in the middle of the plate. It was the lead off at bat and the only run in the entire game. The Sox threatened on a few occasions but couldn't get the runs home.
I thought the final play of the game was quite amazing. Bobby Jenks had retired the first two batters in the top of the ninth and was facing one more Twin. Just before Jenks pitched the ball there was a shot of Ozzie in the dugout telling Jermaine Dye and Brian Anderson to move in from their deep positions. The call paid off for Guillen. The Minnesota batter hit a short fly ball that was just out of reach from the infielders. Brian Anderson made a diving catch to end the game. He never would have made that catch if Guillen didn't tell him to move in.
Incredible game, it reminds me of 2005. Go Sox!
